Plant-Powered Performance: Q&A with Maddie Sturt

As an elite athlete, maintaining high energy levels and adequate protein intake is crucial due to rigorous training routines. While animal-based foods are traditionally known for their high protein content, Maddie is living proof that being plant-based should pose no barrier to performing at your best. Read on as we discuss with Maddie the unique challenges and benefits of thriving as a plant-based athlete.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself. How did you get into CrossFit and what has the journey been like till now?

I got in CrossFit very young, about 12/13 thanks to my mum! I never thought it was something I could do professionally or even make the CrossFit games, so it’s been an amazing and life changing experience.

2. As an elite athlete, what does nutrition mean to you?

Nutrition is super important as an athlete. You want to make sure you can perform and recover so you can be your absolute best.

3. How long have you been following a plant-based diet, and what inspired you to make the switch?

I switched to being plant based in October 2021. It was something I guess I always morally agreed with, but I was in the frame of mind that ‘I needed meat’ to perform. My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer and went plant -based in 2019, so I watched her go through this transition and then ended up gaining the courage to give it a crack in 2021. I haven’t looked back and wish I did it sooner.

4. How has your plant-based diet impacted your performance and recovery in CrossFit?

I was initially worried that I would be impacted negatively but I’ve still been able to recover and perform as normal and then actually improve and better myself! This year has been by far my best performance so far in the season.

5. Have you noticed any differences in your energy levels, or overall well-being since adopting a plant-based diet?

I remember initially feeling different when I switched. My digestion was different, and I felt lighter after meals. Now it has been so long it’s just normal to me! Emotionally I LOVE not eating animals.

6. Can you share some of your favourite plant-based protein sources and how you incorporate them into your meals?

I love True Plant Protein as an addition to my day. I love making protein oats! Then I also love using protein pasta, and then I am a sucker for making crispy tofu.

7. Have you faced any challenges or misconceptions about maintaining a plant-based diet while being an elite athlete?

I haven’t faced any personal challenges; I love what I’m doing and why I’m doing it. I do cop the old comment here and there, but I’m not bothered by it.

8. Do you follow any specific nutritional guidelines or meal plans to ensure you're meeting your dietary needs?

I do track my food from time to time to ensure I am meeting dietary needs and getting in enough food to support my training and recovery. I am also lucky enough to be getting some nutrition coaching from Steph Moore. Steph has been amazing and has been helping me during the season!

9. How do you approach fuelling your body before and after intense workouts?

This is something that I’ve been working on with Steph. It became clear to me last year that I could be doing a lot more and a lot better in terms of fuelling my body before and after training.

10. Are there any specific supplements or nutrients you prioritise as a plant-based athlete?

I do get blood tests to check on my nutrient levels. Typically, a plant-based individual should watch their iron, B12 and zinc.

11. What advice would you give to other athletes interested in transitioning to a plant-based diet?

It’s 100% worth giving it a shot!! Do your own research and make sure you’re prepared. It is different and takes a little bit of getting used to but it’s very worth it.

12. How excited are you about the new Plant Protein Bars?

I am 11/10 excited! I can’t wait to try the new plant-based protein bars!
